Zaria is an elf who lives in the village of Mayyard-Hollow. She is different to the other elves, apart form having shorter more human like ears, she finds out that she can also understand human speech, whereas the other elves cannot. Although Zaria cannot speak the same language as humans can she finds it very easy to learn their language through her own, and finds a way to communicate with them.
In this book, Zaria wakes up and finds herself in the middle of nowhere and doesn't recognize the constellations in the night sky, so she climbs a tree, and to her surprise she sees smoke rising in the distance, which she can only assume is a house. So she begins the long walk through the snow to the source of the smoke...
