Shouto Todoroki wasn't necessarily top of his class, but he was one of the top students. Shouto never really had a good life at home so he was grateful for school. Why you ask? Abuse, depression, anxiety. Y'know... the good stuff.

Izuku Midoriya grew up without a quirk and that caused attention and bullies. Izuku never knew his father. These things never brought him down though. He was always happy and always smiling. 

Midoriya has been noticing Todoroki's strange behavior and sees the cuts on Todoroki's arm
