PROLOGUE

 Smog drifted across my face, burning my eyes and nose. I coughed trying to breathe. Pain split across my head. I groaned in pain and I slowly brought my hand to my face. I sat up amongst the rubble and a ringing in my ears came into focus. I looked around trying to assess the damage and look for the pack.
'Maia, can you sense the pack?' I questioned as nervousness began to knot my stomach.
'I'm trying.' She answered.
I tried to get up. I cried out in pain. I looked down at my leg. A piece of shrapnel jutted out from my thigh.
'What the hell happened?' I demanded.

"What the hell?" I took a step closer to the mirror, staring at my reflection in disbelief. The person looking back was still me, but at the same time it wasn't. I had the same thick, dark, curly hair. The same hazel eyes. The same olive skin with a light dusting of freckles (ugh) scattered across the bridge of my nose. But my curls were now streaked with highlights. And not the subtle, golden-brown ones that sometimes appeared during the summer. No, these were an aggressive, dazzling blond that went from the roots of my hair all the way to the tips. It looked like I had spent a full day getting my hair done in some upscale salon. Never mind that I had never set foot in such a place since the day I was born. My eyes appeared somehow wider and more luminous. The colour brighter, my eyelashes darker up against them. And, when I looked closely, my pupils seemed to be slitted almost like a cat. I looked down at my body. My skinny arms-which had always refused to gain any definition no matter how hard I exercised-were lined with flat, wiry muscles. My bony shoulders were now curved and smooth. My scrawny legs were toned like a dancer. I reached down and lifted my shirt, revealing two subtle lines running vertically down my perfectly flat stomach, hinting at the rock-hard abs underneath. My whole body was rippling with strength. Like liquid steel.

I finally escaped the factory, they kidnapped me from my college. Today is my birthday, and I had planned for it but nothing helped, only calming me down for the moment. A scream echoed out in the silent starry sky, my body freezing... They were looking for me, I just knew it. Again, I ran and jumping over the fence to the property, muscles burning, my breathing short. I look behind me, not seeing the light of the school anymore. I slow down, holding my breath again. Looking around, only trees and bugs surround me. I slowly sank to my knees, gripping the grass in between my fingers, to keep my breathing calm. Tears springing to my eyes and brushing the tears away, slowly getting back to normal. Suddenly, I felt someone behind me. I could feel its strength and power surround me, turning around to see a dark figure behind me. Glowing blue eyes stared at me, seeing it slowly walk toward me. My breathing becoming short again, a panic attack was on the verge. A hand was now on my shoulder and another on my cold cheek, making me look into his eyes, "Let me help you..." He whispered. Rubbing his thumb against my cheek, I slowly nod my head, when a pain began to form in my chest. I knew it was coming. I quickly get away, crawling a couple feet away. "Get away!" I yelled. My skin turning white and the pain erupting inside of me, feeling it try to escape, and I know if I let it. It will hurt this man. Suddenly, he was there in my view. Blue eyes staring at me, and then his lips were on my own. Gasping as I felt the pain beginning to disappear from inside me. Eyes drooping and my body relaxing against his. Soon, the kiss ended and I was empty. My eyes closing. "Don't worry, I will keep you safe..."

When he's caught, he has to throw everything he knows about the world down the drain when he realizes what (or who) exactly lives within his target. "What does that mean?" "What?" "Soul mate, what does it mean?" "I'll tell you later-" "What am I?" "We're not human." He seemed to examine me with pissed off eyes. I was strapped down tightly to the chair and I kept my glare. The mission I was sent of was to kill this man in front of me and I couldn't do it. My boss was going to be furious with me if I came back. I would receive a punishment and so I decided that it would be better if the man in front of me would just kill me instead. I opened my dry lips to speak before gulping when he crouched down, both of his hands on my knees. They were warm and tan. "You're an interesting little thing. I really don't want to beat the shit out of you, but since you won't tell me who the fuck sent you, I guess I'll have to." He gave me a heavy frown and sighed. "Why'd I have to get something like you?" What was he talking about?

I caused the apocalypse of the planet inhabited by the very creatures I was supposed to help. It was the only way to help them, really. But that's a different story for a different day.
