Soon after Quill destroyed Ego and lost Youndu, he fell into a bit of a depression. The guardians helped him through his rough time and right when he started to feel like himself again, a major set back was quickly approaching, and they all knew it.
Note: this is meant to take place during the gap between Volume 2 and Infinity War.
