Mellie is a normal girl transplanted to a school filled with very defined and separated cliques. There just isn't a clique for gardeners who run track and get migraine headaches. She doesn't like labels anyway. She does like the very kind boy across the street, Jax. He is just the sort of person she'd like to be friends with, but he and his bandmates are outcasts at the high school. They don't want to taint her since she is pretty and could be popular. Mellie doesn't care about popularity. She just wants to be normal and average and forget about what happened to her mother.
