Rekha Rao, a thirty-something Indian American professor of art history is disillusioned by academia and haunted by the murder of her father, for which she believes police convicted the wrong person.

She moves away from her match-making family, to live an independent life. As luck would have it, she gets entangled in a second murder, that of her mentor and father figure, Professor Joseph Faust. An idol of the Hindu Goddess Durga, the murder weapon, and is found on the body. Rekha is asked to help Detective Al Newton understand the relationship, if any, between the meaning of the statue and the motive for the murder.
Rekha is attracted to Al but steers clear of him because of her distaste for cops and a prior abusive experience with a boyfriend, doing only what was asked of her. The two constantly clash, starting a love-hate relationship.

When police arrest one of her students, and accuse Faust of idol theft, Rekha's 'dharma', her duty, rears its head, and propels her into looking for the killer on her own. Despite interference from Al, and having to meet a suitor set up by her aunt, she finds the killer, and in the process, tastes the prospect of a romance, and discovers her true identity.

Those who know, need not be told. For those who don't, let me whisper it to you... Newly appointed forensic scientist Vaibhav Roy is sent to a village of 1971 North Bengal, amidst the epitome of Naxal rebellion. He had to prepare a forensic profile to publicly convict a Naxal terrorists in custody. The goal was to reform morally compromised police officers, staging of fake encounters of unarmed suspects, and harbour public goodwill in the process. Vaibhav is joined by other people in his journey, the quiet constable Biraj Basu, the extremely purpose-driven public prosecutor Chaitali Karmakar, and many others. In course of his work, Vaibhav meets Shreema Saha , the local priestess, who tells him of a supernatural threat surrounding Naxalbari, and he finds out that something far more powerful than a rebellion does not want him to succeed in his mission. *. *. *. *. * "Despite what bengali soap opera would have you believe, village girls are not simple anymore. It's the twentieth century that means something" Shreema brushed her loose hair aside clearly a little hurt. Vaibhav took his hands out of his trouser pockets and folded them across his chest. He then turned towards Shreema "Do you think we would make such a cliche couple?" "Oh definitely! You could start a protest and get arrested, the police would get nothing out of you. Then they would provide me with psychological torment just because I committed the crime of love..." happily answered Shreema touching her heart dearly "I don't know if you would still love me though?" "Of course I will" Vaibhav took a step forward "Because I am a perfect gentlemen and you are a lady of questionable choices."
