I watched my mother walk out on my father and me when I was five. From then on, I never had someone who would comb my hair as we talked about how my day went. I didn't have someone who would teach me how to survive the emotional rollercoaster that came with being a girl. Worse of all, I definitely didn't have anyone that I could talk about boys with. That was the first time I truly experienced loss. And it wasn't going to be the last time... Twenty years later, I lost my cat.
