Feeling empty for reasons she's not yet sure of, she's adamant on chasing anything that makes her feel free. Meet Colt--living the country life, private, stubborn, outspoken. In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with. Workaholic, self absorbed, money loving parents don't make for a loving environment. She's not like them, she can't stand it. They may be rich and successful, sure. But no human can live like this. A golden cage is still a cage, and Eva wants to spread her wings. Confined to her parents rules and lifestyle, Eva can only bend so much before she breaks. She's 17 and angry. Eva wants nothing more than to write and travel. Her only escape is her 18th birthday. She'd be a legal adult. She'd have freedom, happiness. But it's too far away. They want to give her away to a man with a crooked smirk and roaming eyes. She can't do it anymore. So she runs away. She finds Logan, a boy of the projects. He's worn down and broken, but under the layers he's swathed himself in since the death of his mother, there is a lively, loving person. Genuine, attractive, and kind, he's Eva's first outside friend. He can take her away and they can both escape. Anyone can go just about anywhere with a stolen 15 grand in their backpack. Follow Eva and Logan on a 12 destination trip across the country and find out if their friendship blooms into something more. "Well, why DO you want me here?" He sits back in his seat, and takes a breath as if trying to figure out how to tell me something. He finally says, "I'm lonely here in the lighthouse. And even though there's and unlock button, it only lets others in- it doesn't let me out. So I couldn't be with anyone going out, but if I let someone in..." he pauses, and smiles. "And then I saw you on the screen the first day I searched. I don't think it was a coincidence that I searched at random and found you. I think it was fate, Claire." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When Claire follows a dangerous dare to break into the 'abandoned lighthouse', she finds that it's not so abandoned, after all. It turns out that the owner, teenage Francis, is trapped in the lighthouse by a strong magic, and though he has everything he could ever want, he's lonely. Claire, now trapped inside, as well, starts to develop feelings for the lighthouse keeper... PLEASE NOTE: I wrote this story when I was twelve, and it hasn't been edited.
