Beau (James) Thompson is a 16 year old boy, who, unlike his school mates, has a passion for horses. His life has never been easy, putting up with the constant teasing, mocking and tormenting that comes along with the love of his sport, but he always had his family there to re-assure him to never take notice.
When Beau's dad dies in a tragic massacre at the college where he works, the Thompson family collapses. Their close relationship drifts, and it appears that Beau no longer has anyone to rely on. As a result of his dad's death, Beau becomes extremely anti-social and insecure, deserting his closest friends, and it seems the only being he can really trust is Sonny, his showjumping gelding of 3 years. When his mum decides that packing up their life and moving to Australia is what's best, Beau is forced to leave everything he's ever known; school, friends, dreams, his beloved Sonny and a special someone who he's willing to give his heart too, someone he never thought he would fall for.
He has to swap all this for a new, and what seems to him, un-inviting world of dust and scrub, where he believes he will never achieve his Grand Prix dream.
The big move pushes Beau in a terrible direction, where he soon gets tangled up in the wrong crowd of people and enters a dangerous, yet captivating world.
A few months after discovering Beau's secret life, his mum begins working shift work and over time, in order to earn more money to buy something for Beau she is positive will change his interests. As a result, Beau discovers a whole new world, and once he's tried it, he realises it's the path he wants to take to the top.
