Firstly we should understand the difference and similarities between two exams of NDA and CDS.
Both the two exams NDA and CDS are conducted by UPSC. However there is a major difference in minimum qualification. The NDA Exam (National defence Academy) is for recruitment in mainly three wings named Army, Navy and Air force whereas CDS (Common Defence Service) is for recruiting candidates for course conducted by Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy.
Major difference is in eligibility for appearing. For NDA exam, the minimum qualification is 10+2 for Army wing and for Navy and Airforce wing, 10+2 or equivalent with physics and Mathematics are required. Whereas in CDS Exam minimum qualification is Degree for Indian Military Academy, Degree in Engineering for Indian Navy Academy and Degree (with Physics and Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering). After exam clearance and SSB selection, candidates are required to go for training. They get same stipend of Rs. 21,000/- per month during training period. After successful training, NDA candidates are awarded Graduation degree like B.Sc/ B.Sc (Computer)/BA/B. Tech whereas CDS candidates are awarded Post Graduate diploma like PG Diploma in Military and Defence Management.
CDS officers get more pay compared to NDA officers, e.g. Lieutenant in NDA get pay of 15,600-39,100 whereas CDS Lieutenant get Rs. 56,100-1,77,500. Lieutenant Colonel in NDA gets Rs.37,400-67,000 whereas Lieutenant Colonel in CDS gets Rs. 1,21,200-2,12,400.
