At the very beginning, Major Stoker - his commanding officer - gave the squad a mission. To retrieve a dead body. However, not expecting an apocalypse, most of his squad died - apart from his best-friend Axel Miller, and other friend Ted. After protecting a 'special' woman's unconscious body for three years, she finally wakes up thanks to a vampire bite. However, the two marines and other refugees in the Seattle hospital weren't expecting her to have special abilities. Unbeknownst to any of the group, Lincoln was sent to the Seattle hospital for a very special reason that he doesn't even know about. Along with the Van Helsing bloodline, there is another vampire-hunter bloodline - which is pretty similar to the Van Helsing's. This bloodline is the Reyes bloodline.
