Far to the south, an animus has overthrown the NightWing throne. Days later, the Great Ice Cliff comes crashing down, exposing the Ice Kingdom to all of Pyrrhia. Soon, the entire tribe is wiped out as a plague infects their kingdom like wildfire. All the IceWings are infected within days, their sanity is destroyed, and any infected dragon inevitably meets death.
It turns out that not every IceWing was killed. In the ruins of their lost civilization, amid the southernmost land of their fallen kingdom, a new world emerges, controlled by the iron fist of an IceWing leader. Dragons call it the Rift, a place between the unbearable cold of the north and the war-torn kingdoms below. Summers are mild, winters are freezing, and blood is spilled year-round.
Citrine and Sunstone are two brothers living on the run in the wilderness of the Rift. They've managed to survive alone on their own so far, but how long can it last? The pair of dragonets are inexperienced and vulnerable, and only a mysterious but kind IceWing plague survivor can shield them from their harsh reality.
But the world is changing, slowly but surely, and the safety Citrine and Sunstone thought they'd had may have never existed. Suddenly, the Rift becomes a much bigger place, and even the smallest decision can cost them their lives if they're not careful. With the threat of the NightWings to the south, and the ever-present danger around them, Citrine and Sunstone won't survive without sacrifice - but they'll have to keep their promise to each other for either of them to make it out alive.
Together until the end.
