Gerard Way lived a normal life. Majored in creative writing in college, had an overly flamboyant gay best friend/roommate, and just wanted somebody to love. He didn't really care who, gender was never an issue. He just wanted somebody. And that's when Frank Iero came into the picture. 

A figment of his own imagination, sure. But figments of peoples imaginations don't usually walk into your Public Speaking class claiming to be a new student.
