Alfred Jones lived a peasant life, with his father and brother to try and provide for he worked for the town's bakery that barley paid enough to get a whole meal for the family. With his brother being too ill all the time and his father working as well they managed to bring home some bread and soup to put on the table.
He's always hated the royal family that lived in the palace up on the hill looking down on them, even though he's never met them. He still had hatred in his heart for the rich and the greedy.
Yes, life was hard when you were born into the peasant life, but when Alfred meets a new pretty face around the village maybe life won't as bad?

Is the clown the fool of the story, or are you? After all, the clown knows it's an act, but the audience is so lost in it that they tend to forget. Alfred had lived a long life. He'd learned a lot in it. That England was easy to gaslight if you knew what you were doing. France would back away from any show of force. Germany could ignore a bumbling idiot even as the evidence piled up just because he wasn't very good with people. Poland saw everything and read people like a book. Prussia would keep his mouth shut if you gave him enough liquor or made him obedient. Russia would turn a blind eye if you turned one to him. China never trusted anyone even if there was evidence of the contrary.
