Happy Hollow is a facility full of children who are lost and confused and, most of all, totally devoid of their past. They have no memories. None of them know why they are here, and strange things keep happening to the children. A girl speaks to people through the toilets, a boy--known as a screamer--recently had his teeth go black before he bashed his own head in. When the main character is put into The Black Box, he starts to remember his past, and everything changes.

"Who is she?" Damien asks, pointing at the girl who's smile instantly stood out to him. He hasn't seen her before, but even from afar, her smile was contagious. Maybe it was the way her lips curved upward, or how her eyes brightened in the dullness of the boxing arena. "Why haven't you done it yet?" "What?" He still didn't understand what she was talking about. "Why haven't you rejected me? Thrown me away like the garbage I am? Meet Piper Hollows. She doesn't like to go out if she has the choice not to. She has things to do and is perfectly fine being in her room on Saturday nights, with her huge pride, her many piles of books, and her sketch pad full of the stick figures she loves to doodle. Starting to notice Piper's isolation from other people, her friends make a bet with her: if she can go on 12 different dates, then they will stop bothering her about her social preferences. But if Piper doesn't go, then they will forever continue to bring it up. As stupid as it sounded, Piper finally saw a way out and to prove that she just wasn't the type to go out and still have her pride intact.
