Every weekend, Emily is forced to lock herself up in her bedroom and listen to the footsteps outside her door. She is the only one in her family who can see and be harmed by ghosts. Everyone in her family and at school considers her to be an outcast. 

When Max shows up at Emily's home, he is the only ghost who does not hurt Emily. He doesn't talk much at first, but he silently agrees to help Emily get rid of the ghosts. In return, Emily helps Max speak to a friend he hasn't seen in a long time.
