18-year-old Mouse, a cynic of the world's seemingly unceasing degradation caused by The Plunge, continues to be indifferent until one momentous mission. Together with fifty other people, his first assignment to contain a minor case of The Plunge is looking hopeless as their numbers dwindle, when Tala, the only active Alice at the time, brings with her a kaleidoscopic glimpse of the universe. Just as she appears so abruptly, she rapidly dissipates together with the black matter that makes the core of The Plunge, saving everyone from Mouse's team.

Five years later, Mouse still remembers those swift seconds when time stood still for him. He feels that she didn't only save him but also gave him a desire for life that is not there before.
