"One seven-billionth of humanity is the only claim I have to call my own the moment I step outside the door; outside of the life laid out for me. My foot catches on the edge of the rug, and my heartbeat quickens. I didn't feed my cat today but that doesn't matter because I'm leaving for good. Thinking only in the present, leaving certainty peering out of that doorway, I'm left wondering what waits outside if who I am ends today. If I'm not me, if I leave this home behind, I have nothing. I step outside the door, and whisper, "But I only have everything to gain." The wind rushes by as I sprint into the street and promptly get smacked down by a charter bus."
