The Heretic's came into being after Kai, a witch, found an immortality spell. He fixed it around to make a spell to make him into a Heretic. Kai made a elixir and drank it. He siphoned the magic from the Traveler boundary spell that protected his coven then slaughtered his entire coven. He consumed a small amount of blood before he grabbed a piece of glass then shoved it his neck. Kai mentions that in order to become a Heretic, one must consume his blood and human blood then die, so that they would become a Heretic. As, Anya had to do. Kai is well known as The Heretic in the witch community with the story varying on information throughout many years.

That the Heretic is feared among the witch community as his ability to practice magic despite having been turned into a vampire. In the 1600s, Kai and Anya, The Heretic's were lured through the underground tunnel system of Mystic Falls, by Maria Hilton into the Armory's Vault after making a plan to destroy the local coven. There, Maria wanted to entrap the Heretic's with a spell. But unfortunately Kai and Anya were a step ahead, and surrounded the area in spell that stopped her from using her own magic. Kai and Anya both ripped her to pieces. They both had slaughtered the local coven and left the town. Nearly four hundred years later, Kai and Inadu will now return to New York to help out Marcel.
