The dust fell and Isaac took a deep breath. the still silence felt eerie to him. The months in lockup, then training, and now on the frontlines of what seemed to be an apocalypse. The gunfire of hive battalions closing in on his position seemed to bring him out of trance. Isaac took a second, checked his mag, and looked out from the pillar that shielded him from the barrage of bullets.
That second was when the sounds came back to him, the gunfire of a nearby battle, the irritable screaming of dying bugs, and their metal attachments shrieking all the same. Issac then heard the sounds of his brother's screams.
"Remy.. Remy... Remy" Isaac said only to himself, as if in some sort of chant. He then yelled it aloud and a moment later, he located and ran to his older brother's side, rifle already strapped to his back. Remy's wound was bad, four shots through his stomach. "Fuck," Isaac said, again to himself. "Fuck is right," Remy coughed out, knowing exactly what his brother was thinking as always. "Bug got me once or twice."
Issac looked around for a second, "Can we get a fucking medic?" he said over the coughs and splatters of blood from Remy's mouth.
A few more seconds passed, the brothers looking at each other, one seeming to say I'm sorry, the other seeming to say you're an idiot, I came on my own and you know it.
The medic arrived and began applying the healing gel into Remy's wounds. This gel was specifically designed to be a quick clotting agent that not only stopped the bleeding, but also healed the wound and kept it from getting infected. Remy felt better almost immediately.
In that moment of relief a flash of light washed over the three soldiers, welcoming and horrifying at the same time.
