Every third Wednesday of October, the 16-year-olds of every village in the Kingdom of Respive are tested to see if they have the blood of a mage in their veins or, if they are especially lucky, the blood of a Dragon Rider.

Twins Nix and Flamma Nocte were of age to test to see what kind of blood ran through their veins. When they arrived for the Choosing, the sisters realized exactly what was pulsing inside their hearts.

Fire and shadows crackled through Flamma and an ability that few truly understand bloomed inside of Nix.

The twins were powerful but dangerous, and no one knew that the moment they touched that stone, everything would change.

The lightening in my veins roared as it seemed to surge out of me. I didn't understand what was happening, and I could barely feel what was happening.
Howls were joining the screams. Howls of pain and desperation. They swirled around the song like it was its dancing partner.
Something slammed into me, something that made the song in my head screech to a stop.
My vision blurred a bit for a moment before it cleared, making me blink a few times. I tried to speak but nothing came out, and I was suddenly aware of how much my throat hurt; like I had been screaming for a long time.
"Don' try and talk, Ice Queen. I could hear that song in your head, and I'm genuinely shocked that your head didn't explode from the force of it. But you were singing it too before you started to spout lightening everywhere."
I stared at him disbelief. I was spouting lightening?
"Yes, you were spouting lightening. I can see the question all over your face. It was like it was coming from straight inside you."

She also had burns on her arms and shirt. The boy was in much worse condition. He was covered in burns, she was covering his face with only his hair showing. They both had the same colored hair. Suddenly my necklace started to glow with an amber color. The girl in front of me had a similar amber glow. Two amber crowns sat on top of the pillow. One female and one male crown sat on top of the pillow. Once I walked closer the glow came back. Once I grabbed the tiara everything became white. I was once again in another room, I attempted to move but I mysteriously couldn't. A neon purple bolt of lightning hit my chest. We both locked eyes with each other. Was that me? Before I could find out, the ground started to be drained into a whole. I was sucked into the drain and everything soon became black and I was free-falling. My back soon hit the ground of the room.
