Laelia and Aedan have returned to ArBrae after finding The Lost Library, yet Laelia feels like she hasn't really returned home. She yearns for life outside of the forest. As multiple opportunities arise for her to explore Ardam, she returns more changed each time. The feelings of alienation from the other elves continue as she fails to develop any of her family's legacies. It also doesn't help that whenever she leaves the forest, she is fated to cross paths with Khairrim Cadeyrn, who unearths forgotten feelings whenever they meet.

Khairrim, weighed down by guilt and secrets, has to make a difficult choice in order to keep Laelia safe, as the forest's magic fail to provide the same protection it once did. However, this time Laelia's fate is out of his hands as a friend betrays him and offers Laelia complete freedom. Freedom always comes with a price and Laelia realises this too late.

Rorith, a red-haired thief, has risked everything in order to successfully pull off the heist of the century: stealing the crowns of the Council from under their noses in Catel Alesam. He is betrayed and has to flee to his family farm in Clearview-Riversmeet where his path crosses with Laelia's. Will Rorith and Laelia figure out Ardam's curse and break it once and for all?

The threat from Darkeland in the West continues to grow, as Vayog the Sixth and his allies in Ardam work toward the Council and Ligtland's demise. The Mountains and Raven's Peak stand in their way, but Vayog has had centuries to ensure his revenge.

And the millennia-old question still stands: what happened to Aebbé the Cursed?
