Fifteen-year-old Beth Penfield knows that her parents have secrets, stories from their past that they're not willing to share. They won't talk about her mother's best friend, who died on the day that Beth was born. They've hidden the truth about her father's birth family--even though it's her family, as well.

So far, she hasn't sought the answers.

But two newcomers to her school bring big changes--a tough kid with a questionable reputation and a meddling special ed teacher with an unusual interest in Beth's family. Drawn to one and wary of the other, Beth begins to question which people in her life she can trust.
