After the fall of Voldemort, the practice of Dark Magic has completely disappeared. Anyone caught using Dark Magic is sent directly to Azkaban. All former Death Eaters are caught and tried for war crimes in front of the Wizengamot, most of them imprisoned for life.

Castor Rosier, son of infamous Death Eater Evan Rosier, escapes to Russia to avoid persecution. There, he meets a witch who claims to know a safe haven for those who practice the Dark Arts. She leads him to a shimmering castle in Siberia, set far into the deathly cold tundra away from the prying eyes of wizards and muggles alike.

Chistayakrov School of the Dark Arts has been Calypso Sobel's home her entire life. Her father, Castor, arrived there a mere two years before her birth, and since then, he has never left. Calypso has attended school at Chistayakrov since she was six, and the summer before her eleventh year, the Headmistress gives her a mission; travel to England to enroll in their school of magic, learn how the practice of the Dark Arts is regulated, and most importantly, earn the trust of the Malfoy boy. The practice of the Dark Arts has been prevalent in the Malfoy family for generations, and for the witches and wizards at Chistayakrov, Malfoy blood is all they need for a reawakening of Dark Magic.
