Ash Ketchum had lost the Kalos League, saved the region with companions, and went back to Kanto with his trusty Pikachu. The two are unaware, that his friends, family are forced to betrayed him, or they shall pay the coincidence of their love ones. Ash wasn't expecting the betrayal, and was left heartbroken from that day forward.

His Pokémon had gone missing, as someone must have stolen them but only a few Pokémon were left behind. While trying to escape Pallet Town, the ones responsible for his betrayal had attacked him, injuring Ash into running into Pallet Forest.

Few years later, a new tournament was opening but before that, someone had dominated the Kanto's Champion League and nearly everyone from each region are watching. 

The Kanto Champion, who happens to be also Alola's Champion, too, was never seen by public. It has been only confirmed that someone defeated Lance, the former Kanto Champion, and no one never know who the Champion was.
