When Samantha Pierce and her best friend are kidnapped, she finds herself awake in a large desert, devoid of colour: including herself. She can't remove the clothes she wears, can't remember her name, doesn't know where her friend is and, even stranger, there is a boy in a mask present, watching her every move.
But what the boy in the mask reveals turns out to be far, far worse: Samantha is asleep in a laboratory, strapped to headgear that allows her to find herself in this world with other test subjects.
