"Rowan." Glowing blue eyes locked on green. A low growl echoed in the clearing. A warning. Or a threat. "Rowan, it's me. Kaine. Remember?" The growl grew louder as Kaine took a risky step closer. "Your boyfriend. This isn't you, Ro. Come back to me, love."
A flash of white light lit the room, blinding the man. He flinched back, wincing at the bright light. Rowan prowled forward, now just as human as the male standing before her. She flicked a single strand of silver hair over her shoulder, staring at Kaine silently. He cowered under her gaze, his eyes suddenly falling to the ground. He attempted to fight his instincts - fight the wolf he was unable to summon - but he quickly learned his attempts were futile and relaxed, sinking into a bow. Rowan smirked, not even trying to contain her delight.
"At least we know that part of your heritage is fully functional," she drawled, slowly circling him. "Tell me, Kaine. How'd you do it? How did you trick the bond?"
Kaine inhaled sharply, shaking his head. Quick, jerky movements.
"T-that's not p-p-possible, Ro-"
"Don't lie to me, Kaine. We both know it is. And we both know one way it's done. But you're not dead." Rowan slid her slim fingers beneath his chin and lifted it. "So, how did you do it?"
"I d-don't k-" A hand slid around Rowan's waist and pulled her away from the man. She softened into his embrace, but her eyes stayed fixed on the man kneeling before her.
"He didn't hurt us. We're both here now. Let him go. Please."
