(SoulmateAU) Keith swore he'd never look into that deep ocean that resides within his piercing eyes ever again. He swore he'd never fall in love. He swore that the boy he once called a friend was now called foe. Why? Because he had fallen in love with him already. When he swore he wouldn't fall, he was swearing that he wouldn't fall any deeper. He cast him aside, leaving the ocean eyed boy confused and hurt. But high school comes around and the two boys face a difficult journey through the forest of Romance. Thickets of pining, thorns of arguments, luscious flowers of lust all inhabit that very forest. The moment he had fallen he saw a world of color. More prominently, he saw that very ocean. As soon as he left, the world was grey. Soon enough, the world bursts into color for these two boys. They already found their loves. Keith had fallen into a blue abyss.

As humans, you have to fight irrelevance. There are seven billion humans on Earth, approximately. Every time someone dies, someone is born to replace them, to mask the pain of loss. You, as one person, do not exist to around six billion, nine hundred ninety-nine million, nine hundred ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred ninety-five people, if you are truly loved by five persons. Luck of the draw, life on Earth is. At least, that's what the human species chooses to believe. Now, knowing more alien species exist than human races, Lance feels suffocated. He has to fight even more for that little bit of relevance, to get acknowledged. Even being the blue lion of Voltron doesn't make much difference, since rarely do they actually see him . ____________________________________________________________________ A promised vacation isn't as relaxing as Lance hopes. Keith hated himself for liking Lance. His limber build, the way he carried himself with shoulders raised and chin held high. His blue eyes, dark like the sea's deep, inky bottom. His tangled mess of dark brown hair that stood at odd angles, and never seemed to obey Lance's vigorous brushing. His smooth, light brown skin as he crinkled his nose, or batted the sand from his eyes on a particularly windy afternoon. Even his laugh, as loudly obnoxious as it was, Keith adored. And that was the worst part, because, unlike Keith, Lance hated him. With every word he uttered, an argument seemed to arise. Lance constantly joked and poked fun of Keith, determined to one up him in every way imaginable. So, in all retrospect, Keith had every right to detest Lance in return. But that was the thing: he didn't. Even as Lance stood before him on the worst days - face scrunched and reddened, throat hoarse from the shouting - all Keith thought as he stood stone faced, eyes locked on Lance's chattering lips, was: 'wow, I really want to kiss this shit-head.' And then he was both mad at himself and the world. Mad at himself for imagining Lance in ways he shouldn't, and mad at the world for allowing Lance to be in his life in the first place. It was torture. As powerful as a lash to the chest, or a hammer to the kneecap. Especially now, as Keith stood above Lance's cold, unflinching corpse. The dead boy's bony hands crossed over his chest, shoulders squared atop the white, velvet cushion that rested inside the opened coffin. He wore the best suit and tie money could buy, and had his shaven scalp hidden by a head of hair that was similar, but could never match the boy's old image. The image before cancer. He couldn't believe Lance had just said that -he pondered on the possibility of having misheard him- but his voice had sounded so honest and so painfully hurt, he knew there was no way Lance's words weren't true. The honesty dripping from his drunk-stained words left Keith breathless. He never thought he'd live to hear those words coming from Lance, he was certain he would never love him back, he thought he liked Kinkade, as much as it pissed him off the idea.
