Emanuel leaned backwards now, elbows resting on the arms of his chair, his gaze steady and deliberate. The weight of it rooted Marcel in place. "I have a proposition in mind."

Marcel's throat felt dry. "Proposition," he repeated carefully, as though the word itself might burn if he held it too long.

"Yes," Emanuel said smoothly, almost lazily, as if the entire conversation were obvious. "I need someone beside me. Someone to play the role of my partner in public. To attend dinners, stand at my side at gatherings, accompany me to court. Nothing more."

The words slid into Marcel's ears like ice water. His stomach knotted. Partner. The word echoed, sharp and wrong. He searched Emanuel's face for any sign of jest, but the King's expression remained calm, intent, almost predatory in its certainty.

"You want me," Marcel said slowly, "to pretend... to be...your boyfriend."

"Boyfriend sounds juvenile. We're not children. I tend to prefer the term 'lovers'."
