Mae has a mysterious illness that she has been living with her whole life. She is an islander whose culture believes that the mermaids in their water bring luck and protection, but as the outside world advances and the need for the island's hand crafted goods decline, the Lau Zi people are getting desperate. A scientific study finds that mermaid organs can cure certain rare diseases, creating potential financial success for the islanders if they are willing to throw away more than four hundred years of culture and history. As more is discovered about Mae's illness her father is faced with a decision. Will he save his daughter or uphold his faith?
