He moved to California, taking her car and a box of her things to remember her by. At some point, he broke down one night and drank until he couldn't function. He wrecked his car and nearly died. That's when his friends had decided that enough was enough. They cleaned up his life, they helped him get better. They knew there was no going back from losing Mary, but they had to at least try and help him. All Billy wanted was to get everything back. To get Mary back.
