Sub 1,000 word Science Fiction competition entry for the following prompt:
Mission Log day 27, around noon. Run out of other options, we decided to explore the cave. Gillian claimed she knew enough about speleology to make this sound like a piece of cake. The doc supported her, and so I didn't tell them about my claustrophobia. Anyway, we were in for a major surprise.
Based on the log entry and a photo [of a cave], write a brand new science fiction story.

The Only
I lost myself somewhere between space and time. I repeated my name over and over, refusing to leave myself behind. But the more I decintigrated, the more of myself I lost, until everything, my name, Timmy's smile, even my parents were forgotten. I found nothing but black space and white silence. The longer I stayed, however, the more vivid the colors became, and then they began to take shape. After what felt like hours, I was myself again, strapped to a chair with Jesse materializing in front of me. I'm Stasey. When the aliens attacked Earth, myself, my best friend Jesse, and my "friend" Timothy may have been the only people to survive. We're on a quest to find other survivors and potentially save our planet, but to do that we have to avoid being shot, eaten, or falling in love. But sometimes things work out differently than we expect, and we have to make the decision: sacrifice ourselves for the ones we love, or the ones we love for the ones we can save.Complete

(Bold italics resemble thoughts) In a distant future, humanity destroyed Earth and fled to find another planet to live on. They stumbled across an Earth-like planet in a nearby galaxy. They named it Ether. Some people didn't want to live on Ether and decided to inhabit the other planets in the galaxy. The inhabitants of each planet developed diverse uncanny abilities due to rapid evolution and adaptation. Soon after, a civilization was introduced to these planets. A war broke out between two planets: Galilea and Anaka. Spero wakes up in a familiar room. After awaking after a 4 month coma, he's sent on missions to uncover the truth about the war. The Cave
Five co-workers and a guide struggle with a creature, a live relic from the past and from another dimensional plane. The creature is simultaneously lizard and birdlike, while also having anthropoidic characteristics. Once upon a time, this alien race made contact with a lost human Civilization in the region. The two races initially made an alliance, but the greed of some of the humans caused a war to erupt. The discovery and cursory inspection of the cave by one of the characters results in an impromptu, amateur tour. During the journey through the cave one of the co-workers, through a combination of stubbornness, curiosity and willfulness, becomes separated. He stumbles upon a cache of interesting artifacts inside of an oddly inhuman room with alien technology. It is in these confines where he unlocks the being whose last memories of human interaction are still freshly stinging its memory. The group grapples through the tenuous caves trying to escape the creature's vengeful wrath. The ensuing mad flight from the cave to relative safety results in a battle for survival.Complete
