Liu Huashuang (trl: elegant frost) is a 23 year old medical student in Peking who is on the verge of being expelled for not being able to pay his university fees. One day he finds a heavily wounded person in front of his house. He takes him in and treats his wounds. The person he saved is no other person than Mo Shang (trl: ink tragedy), who introduces himself as Mo Yeshi (his birth name meaning night stone), the guardian of the ink world, a parallel universum one can enter through paintings. Liu Huashang does not believe one single word and tries to call the ambulance but he is interrupted by a monstrous creature that jumped out of an old Chinese painting he inherited from his late mother. Mo Shang saves Huashang's life but ends up being dragged back into the ink world by the creature. Feeling responsible of what happened, Huashang also jumps into the painting and wakes up in the ink world where he finds out who he really is.
