Ambushed and assaulted by rogue English soldiers, William, James, and Jenny Wallace are bound and taken into the forest where horrible things are done to them, leaving the children with deep emotional scars, ones which never fully heal and give William in particular his fiery hatred of the English as a people. As he grows up Scotland continues to face threats of English aggression until it falls on William, and others like him, to defend their country when their so-called leaders bend the knee to Longshanks.
