Every year, my town chooses a sacrifice for the demon that "watches over" our home. In exchange for a person from the village between the ages of 17 to 25, the demon protects our village. And because of that pact, our village is protected for the next year, under the demon's watchful eyes. No one knows what happens to those who the demon chooses, but there's a lot of theories about it. One is that the demon eats or absorbs those who are chosen - another, that it kills them. But this year, I'm the one who's chosen. I get to meet the demon I've feared since I was a child, and now that I'm 24, and am considered an adult, I could have left the village behind. But I didn't. Something inside me told me to stay. Now, I'm going to die. I just know it. I can't leave now, or run away, because the town would be unprotected for a whole year, and that's where my family lives. I don't know what to do, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Besides, how bad can this demon be if they're guarding our town?Complete

I glanced at both of them before holding his glare with my own. He was giving me a cold stare, caging me in like an animal. I bit my lip, trying to hold it back. I was never good in situations like these. He stopped leaning forward when his face was just inches from mine. He was trying to make me uncomfortable. Trying to scare me, but he didn't. He punched the wall in an effort to scare me but instead made me laugh even harder, falling to the ground and rolling on my side. Soon I had his friend laughing with me as the man in front of me glared at both of us. "Don't give me that look. She's the one who started laughing." His friend said, wheezing a little bit and trying to stop laughing. I calmed down a bit, standing up to face them, a smile on my face. "Now, if you're done threatening me," I raise an eyebrow. "Or at least trying to. I'll be on my way." With that, I grabbed my backpack, turned my back to them, and walked away.Complete

Standing on the path, my life flashed before my eyes. The gun directed at me, went off. I could see the flash and the bullet coming straight for me, but I'm frozen to the spot I'm standing, unable to move or think clearly. In the darkness of her dreams, she saw herself standing at a window looking down below, only to see a misting, swirling fog. She could not see the ground and did not know how far down it was. She had no idea where she was. Soon after, she was led down a dark hallway to a room with a large altar. She felt herself being lifted up and then placed back down on the hard stone surface. Now all she could see was a large man, holding a knife in his hands, with the sharp edge pointed directly over her heart...Then a different man with deep blue eyes was looking down at her, and his hand was caressing her face, telling her everything was going to be ok. A loud bang on the door made her startle and rise up. There, coming through the door, were several large angry men, dressed strangely in what looked like animal furs and carrying ominous looking weapons. Some had clubs with sharp objects attached to the ends and others had sharp axes and swords. She could hear her own screams escaping from her lips, and she opened her eyes to notice she was lying in her bed in the safety of her room in the convent where she lived.
