It has been three months since Ember Fairose defeated Jacob Ashwright, and the Shadow World has been lulled into a certain sense of peace, or so it seems.
In the New York Institute, Ember is leading the seemingly perfect life-she is raising her ten month-old daughter alongside her fiancé, Jonathan Morgenstern, has her loyal parabatai, Isabelle Lightwood, standing by her side, and has the help and love of all of her friends and family, not to mention that everyone in the Shadow World seems to know her name and face. To make matters worse, a familiar evil emerges from the shadows, stronger than ever, calling Ember back to the battlefield. The hope of finally achieving peace in the Shadow World shatters, as does Ember's hopes of living a simple, uncomplicated life with her family.
Suddenly the perfect life doesn't seem perfect anymore. Tensions appear in places she never thought possible when a person from Jonathan's past makes an unwelcome reappearance, shaking them to the core with a surprising revelation, and suddenly she finds herself questioning the only thing she never thought she would ever have doubts about.

Jonathan Morgensterns' Twin, Rafe Lightwood.
Rafe Oskar Lightwood neè Morgenstern is the slightly younger, mostly identical twin brother of Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern. Due to how little demon blood he actually has in his system, unlike his twin brother, Rafe was raised alongside Jace Herondale at the Wayland Estate. The demon blood has given Rafe one particular gift though. He can sense blood connections between people. Because of this, both he and Jace know that Jace isn't really Valentines' son, but that doesn't make their bond any less strong. Rafe and Jonathan share a small Mark, which has been on their forearms since birth. This Mark enables them to know how close they are to each other, as well as feel each others' emotions. The closer the twins are to each other, the darker the Mark gets. But this comes with drawbacks. Because of Jonathan being in the Seelie Realm, whenever Rafe gets too worked up and angry, Jonathan feels it and gets angry as well. This results in them both coughing blood until they can calm themselves down. And if one twin dies, the Mark will fade to a silvery scar, but never fully heal beyond that. Due to Ragnor Fell often helping Jocelyn and Clary hide when they are being tracked, and having helped him during his first nasty coughing fit that nearly killed him and Jonathan, Rafe is quite close to Ragnor.
