The first leader of the Colony, Stevens, was killed by the Colony AI.  That much is known.  The unanswered question is why.  "The Bargain" is a fan fiction story based on Hugh Howey's "Half Way Home," that addresses this question.  The Bargain is a hard science fiction story following this tragic leader's desperate, but doomed attempt to save the colony and how he paid the ultimate price for such failure.
