When someone is faced with unrequited love, a bed of flowers begins to grow in their lungs, causing the victim to cough up petals, sometimes even whole flowers.
Unless the victim's one-sided love is returned, they will eventually die as the flowers fill the lungs.
There is an operation to remove the flower bed, but doing so will also remove all feelings for their love interest and, well....
For some, death is preferable. "
