The King's Soldier

When the country thought of King Ellison they thought of a brave man, a kind and wise man, one who would do anything to better the lives of his people. When the country thought of Ralisho Grathe they thought of no one, as the Captain's name was unknown amongst the people, those his position brought humor and entertainment to anyone who thought of it. To be the king's concubine was a great dishonor, a dishonor fitting for an ex military captain, one who fought their own sons and soldiers with intention to do harm. Ralisho Grathe was nothing, less than nothing. A shame to himself, his family, and his countrymen.

King Ellison told himself that it was all for the war effort, that the entire charade was a sacrifice they both made for his country. To everyone else he woke up every morning to a disgrace, but to those who knew the truth? He woke to the scarred face and deep blue eyes of the hero of his country, a soldier who sacrificed everything for the greater good, a man untouched by the silly whims of the human soul.

To him, and him alone? He was yet entirely sure, except for one thing. Never had he woken to see the love of his life.
