In suburban Japan,  middle school exorcist-in-training Akihito Hinomoto is shocked when he receives a call from the mother of his former childhood friend, Ren Kurosawa, begging him to help her son. Ren is supposedly possessed, but after countless exorcism attempts, it is discovered that Ren actually has a bad case of "chuunibyou" or "middle school disease," a condition that makes the victim believe that he or she has special, magical powers. After being roped into helping Ren overcome his disease,  Akihito transfers to Ren's school. But things at Edogawa Academy aren't what they seem, and something evil is afoot...
