Kath lived a quiet life, with only family and the occasional travellers to disrupt her solitude. She was happy this way, was proud of what she built up and was prepared to live in this home for all her days. Lately, rumours had been spreading around about a group of demons who would travel into her villages and take people's houses, and sometimes the people themselves. Kath doesn't believe these rumours, until she finds herself in their grasp.

Abel, a native of Wisconsin, was involved in a violent crash when he was nine, causing him to lose his arm and his sister when she was ejected from the car. In an attempt to wash the stains of death from their family name, Abel and his parents decide to move to Massachusetts, where they take up the oldest house on Buford St. But as the days drag by, Abel begins to know all too well why the two-story brick house was left abandoned for so many years. Now at the age of ten, he knows he cannot trust his father, who thus far hasn't believed him, his mother, who has been subject to frequent possessions, his counselor, who is too light hearted for a conversation about demons, or any of the public who would lock him up under the suspicion of being a nutcase. Which, as the situation has proved many times, leaves only Mia, who doubles as full-time bookworm and his closest and most brave friend. As he faces the death of his sister, bullying at school, and constant hauntings, Abel and Mia must find a way to best the spirit that so demandingly wants to drive them insane. Of course, there is only one way to do this: get it to give up its name. Only can the pair rest if the soul of his sister is abandoned by the demon who wants him dead most.
