What is missing from the U.S. men's national soccer team?

Over the past few years, soccer in the U.S. has developed from a little known sport to a game that many people care and participate in, whether they are playing or spectating. This sudden rise in popularity has produced many top class men players from the U.S. that have gone overseas to play for European teams such as Chelsea, Schalke, and other top teams. However, while the women's team has excelled against almost any opposition, our men's national team has demonstrated that they are far off from excelling in their own right. So what is missing?
