Thea Tate, an ordinary girl who has a tendency to be late. Her class is taken on a field trip to Civil City Zoo, a place where genetically modified animals are on display. Whilst viewing the Bluebirds, Thea is made to keep watch as the members of her group go inside the enclosure to get a better look.

She wakes up the next day with strange abilities, ones that nobody else has, and a new responsibility.

Meanwhile, Vinicus Cauldwell enjoys the power he has as Murkbourne's most feared super-villain. For once, he can sit back and relax without being pestered by the police. That is, until Max arrives. Vinicus isn't happy about having to fight a child, but he can't let Max find out. After all, super-villains can't be "good people"... Can they? We can't all be born heroes.
