Last night when I was driving home, my boyfriend and I saw a mother dead on the road. She had been killed in a hit and run. She was with child when it happened. No-one stopped to help her. No-one stopped to mourn. Cars continued to drive past her lifeless body as the night went on. I pulled my car to the side and stopped to move her. It was when we walked out to her that we realized that she was pregnant. My boyfriend walked ahead of me; he used some paper I had in my car to wrap his hands with to safely move her off the road. I thought I saw her entrails scattered on the road next to her, but it was the fetus of her baby that I imagine was sent hurtling from her on impact. The baby's body was broken and bloody, barely alive before it was taken. And yet, only I and my lover were there to mourn their deaths.
We laid their bodies together, on the grass by the road as we had no 'where' or means to bury them. We knelt over them a while, reassuring them they were in a better place; reassuring the mother that at least her child didn't have to see the world we live in. We wished them all our hope and love before getting back in my car.
I wish I could say this was a strange occurrence but unfortunately this is one of the better examples of the bodies I've seen on the road that no one stops for. At least this mother and her child were not squashed and tattered by other cars, although that is probably only because they were still warm. They were recently dead. I know full well that if an hour had passed since their lives did, their bodies would have been disrespected further. At least these were found before they could be mutilated more by people who do not care.
I fear for our world, where the lives of so many are disregarded enough to be passed by hundreds if not thousands of motorists because they are too busy getting to where they're going to stop and give life the proper respect it deserves.
