A collection of reviews I made for the Fireworks Awards hosted by @wi_se_gi_rl , which made at least half the score of 70 points in total and thus I recommend for new readers' attention

The reviews here are posted with permission of the stories' authors and are not general reviews, but rather short inspections according the contest's rubrics. They are published to allow the authors to see how they reached their score in the contest

Please, pleasepleaseplease, bear in mind these reviews are simply reflections of how each story has been perceived by me personally - focusing on general attributes and topics that could have been elaborated/explored further as well as personal preferences - they do not intend to diminish the authors' hard work and in NO way represent a wider audience!

I would like to point out that the reviews are really short excerpts, and due to that nature are mainly focusing on what could be improved/ was missing in my opinion as a reader - if something stood out to me, be it positive or negative, it is included in a simple short phrase

ALL of the posted works here are stories I recommend to read, even those which did not meet my personal interests, because they are all great works! Have a look, you might be just as surprised upon those hidden gems as I was

WARNING R-RATED Disaster-in-Waiting was a dream come true for me. Firstly writing it and then sharing it on here and receiving such a wonderful response to it. It was because of the support and encouragement on here that I finally took the decision to self-publish as an e-book. It is available on Amazon and can be read for free on there with Kindle Unlimited. ****Mature audience only due to adult themes; sex, language and situations**** Eloise Ross is married to Michael, her much older and recently retired husband. He fills his days with golf and walking the dog, while she fills her days working as a newly appointed P.A. to the CEO of an international company. One night, disillusioned with her sexless marriage she goes out alone, drinks beer and dances with a handsome stranger. The moves on the dance floor quickly lead to passion and excitement like El has never known, but it was only one night, one time. Just that once couldn't mean anything, could it? Just that once changed her view on everything she'd ever thought she'd known or valued; her home, family, husband and marriage, but most of all herself. As her life begins to unravel, with twists and turns that make her laugh, cry and despair El has only one constant to hang onto, her handsome stranger. "Because I don't want to end it. I'm not exactly what you'd call experienced," I said with a warm flush creeping up my cheeks. "I thought everything I had, with Michael was an ideal life until that night, when I met you and something switched inside me, a realisation that it was as far from ideal as anything ever could be. I don't think I'm being clear here, sorry. I am not trying to pin my happiness or the consequences of this on you, God, I don't even call you by your first name so to expect anything of you is not realistic!"

Evanly craves love, affection, satisfaction, and sex, all neglected in her loveless marriage. But a ray of hope appears when she encounters a wealthy young man seeking only friendship. Drawn inexplicably closer to him, she wonders if her feelings stem from lust or genuine love. Will she surrender to her desires? Can she lower her defenses and allow him into her heart? Meanwhile, Devon is shattered after his fiancée abruptly ends their relationship at their anniversary party. Vowing never to love again, he reluctantly agrees to a bet suggested by his brother, Danzel: make a woman fall for him within a year and win $800,000. Yet, when he meets his temporary girlfriend, his emotions are unexpectedly stirred. Was it love at first sight, or is there a hidden agenda? As Evanly navigates the complexities of her marriage and her growing attraction, and Devon grapples with his bet and newfound feelings, their lives intertwine in unexpected ways. Will Devon manage to keep up with the terms of the bet? What will become of Evanly's marriage if she lets her guard down? Can she resist her desires and remain faithful, or will love lead her astray? _____ -Except- "Because I love you!", My voice was raw now, almost desperate. "Because I don't know how to exist in a world where you're not mine." She inhaled shakily, crossing her arms as if trying to shield herself from the weight of my words. "That's not love, Devon. That's obsession." I stepped closer, my hands framing her face gently, forcing her to look at me. "Then let it be obsession. Let it be whatever the fuck it is, but don't you dare tell me you don't feel it too. _____ Join Evanly and Devon as they navigate the thin line between lust and love, desire and loyalty, in a story where passions ignite and hearts are tested. WARNING, CONTAINS: Mature Language, Sex scenes, Assault, Abuse, Rape. (STILL EDITING)
The Standouts - A Critique Contest by PAULAPDX (Summer 2019 Edition) by paulapdx

🛑 - CLOSED until 2021. ***If you're interested in my critiques, you might want to check out my weekly newsletter for opportunities to get a personalized critique. https://paula.substack.com/p/coming-soon Does your work stand out in an overly-crowded landscape? Does your story & writing shine as far as: ★ - Concept ★ - Voice ★ - Storytelling The Standouts is a fun, but hopefully helpful contest that can give you a sense of whether your story resonates with someone who's got some experience under her belt. Great! But who are you to judge? Fair question. This is not to humble-brag, but I've been critiquing and have worked with story development for quite some time, and I've picked up a lot along the way. ☙ - As an Ambassador, I work on content projects. ☙ - If you look at my profile, you'll see everything I've published so far has managed to standout in one way or another, whether by leading me to become a Wattpad Star; or by winning a Watty (twice!); or by being picked as a Top 10 in major Wattpad contests (twice!); or being featured. All I'm saying is I'm no slouch. I'm not brilliant either. But I've got some experience around what can catch an agent, editor, or judge's eye, and I'd like to share that with the community. ☙ - In another lifetime, I used to work for HBO in Development and at ICM (the talent agency) in their writers' department which means I understand how professionals quickly gauge whether or not they'll take a closer look at a work and/or make an offer. This kind of insight can be helpful if you're planning to submit your work or even just want to stand out more here on Wattpad. ☙ - I used to provide critiques for three writers, all of them traditionally published. They seemed to value my insight. Read the RULES, LOGISTICS & PRIZES chapter for guidelines. All entries get a brief assessment of their first chapter, with winners getting more extensive critiques. Sound interesting? Give it a go! 😊

Thirteen Points of Light

12 parts Complete

After a night on the town, Sarah wakes up to a miserable hangover. But it's nothing compared to what comes next. After attempting to light a cigarette, she feels that something isn't quite right. Soon she'll discover that everything is very wrong. My entry in the Open Novella Contest III, Feb 2020. April 28. Just got the news that Thirteen Points has made it through the second round. Now I have to finish by May 5th. I'm not as far along as I had hoped at this point, but I'm sure I can make it. May 4th. 12:10 am. Finished. Submitted. Good night. May 20th. Well, 13 Points made the Long List. I have no idea how many original entries there were but about 940 made the first cut. There's 150 on the Long List. Not bad for my first time out. Now we'll wait and see how we fare on the Short List. May 30th. Well, Sarah and company didn't make the Short List. I can't say I'm disappointed though. This was my first attempt at this type of writing . Thanks for reading and voting. Now back to Short Story writing If you are also in the ONC, Good Luck and have fun!
