Rumors abound in the house of a curse on the women of the family. Daniel Winters' own wife ran mad before throwing herself into a mountain chasm by her home. Theo's wife, Danny's mother, was rumored to have gone insane as well before she died in childbirth. With tensions rising between union strikers at their mines and Daniel Winters trying to wrestle business decisions from his stoic grandson, Lucrezia is plagued by dreams and visions in the echoing home as her attraction to Theo grows.
