The reader (yes you, female btw. I'm not currently good at gender neutral characters, but i'll get there eventually, just not in this fic). is an insomniac who wants to become a member of the Survey Corps. It's been a life long dream of hers to fight off titans and save people and she's finally old enough to begin training for the military. Leaving her family at home and working hard, she becomes a great soldier but goes through struggles and turmoil as the secrets of titans begin to unfurl. *Pretty much follows the anime, but with an extra character thrown in and minor changes to the actual plot. So be caught up with season 3 before you start, unless you don't care about spoilers, in which case go nuts.
