When he was very young, Lex Coaltreader went with his family to the main continent of Audlan, leaving behind their desolate home continent, the straylands, a bleak desert that spans the entire island. They fled to Audlan seeking a better life for themselves and their child. As Lex grew up in the Duessel Territories, an absolute monarchy split into five sub-regions for easier governance, he earned acclaim as a skilled mercenary and folk hero. Now he faces the greatest challenge of his career; he has been brought before the High Lord of his territories and tasked with taking out The Band of Laughing Skulls, a group of exiled knights-turned-necromancers who seek to overthrow the current High Lord. As Lex and his hand-picked group of ragtag warriors face down this new threat, they must find a way to kill those who have domain over death itself.

The Guardians are scattered, and war threatens all of Zenartha as the people know it. The rebels in Chardan take drastic measures to ensure their control over their country, and others follow suit. All those involved are forced to make decisions against their own wishes just to survive. In the chaos, however, the remaining Guardians in Western Euradon are fighting their own battles, refusing to take sides if it means shedding people's blood in the place of monsters' blood. There is one person whose ascension to Chardan's throne will hopefully stop the wars, but there is also the risk that the violence will only worsen. It is a risk that must be taken, for the sake of everyone.
