A coming of age story about a boy and his car. Set in the contemporary American south, we follow the edification of Sam McKay, a modest, middle-class thirty-something whose relationship with an uncommon and exceptional automobile changes as the landscape of his life unfolds. Written in a series of interlocking vignettes that evokes the feeling of flipping through an old car manual: THE COMPANION TO A RED CAR races over the twisting roads of Sam's life as he learns about friendship, love, and sacrifice on his way to becoming a man.
