Fourteen year old Amelia Brown has lived in the Lower East Side of New York City her whole life. Her family lives in a run-down, rough apartment, highly infested with bed bugs, in one of the worst neighborhoods in New York City- or even North America. Amelia, her older brother Nathan, and her single mother know what it's like to be homeless and hungry- the family had taken their turns sleeping on the street, and bouncing from apartment to apartment. At an extreamly young age, Amelia and Nathan have both been exposed to the true horrors of the Lower East Side; anywhere from drug addicts and alchoholics to hookers and notorious criminals. Life isn't exactly easy, but yet Amelia feels she is lucky to be alive.
With most people already struggling to get by as it is, sudenlly a horrific robbing spree breaks out in the Lower East Side, leaving innocent people homeless, hungry and helpless. After the city polices' lack of care, the crimes continue, getting more brutal with time. After one of the Brown's closest friends get robbed and are forced to leave their house, the people decide they have had enough, and take matters into their own hands. Without even knowing it, Amelia and Nathan get caught up in one of the robberies, and realize that the criminals are after way more then just the people's money. The Browns and their friends are sucked into the deadly mess, and discover the horrifingly dark and true secrets of the Lower East Side, while also making new enemies, unbreakable bonds, and finding the truth about themselves.
